Zambia’s Top 5 Best-selling Used Toyota Sedans
For Zambians thinking about importing a Japanese used car, one of the first major considerations is the price, followed by functionality, availability of spare parts, and to some extent, class.
In Zambia Toyota’s large range of sedans is particularly popular, thanks to their renowned driveability and reliability, making it a little difficult to decide. To make the choice a little easier, here are the top five used Toyota sedans that Zambians love to drive.
5. Toyota Belta
Average Used Price: $1,735 to $2,497 The Toyota Belta is a petrol-powered classic sub-compact sedan which first began production in 2006. It is Toyota’s smallest sedan; however, it still maintains a sitting capacity of five people. The first generation (2006-2016) is a popular brand within the used car market, most probably due to its curved, refined design and easy handling. Despite its size, the interior is very comfortable as it offers a big cabin and has a spacious luggage area. It is available in 3- and 4-cylinder engines, with a tank capacity of around 42 liters. The cars average fuel efficiency is about 4.6 to 5.1L/100km. It is a 2-wheel drive vehicle. The engine size differs from one Belta to another, starting at 996 cc through to 1496 cc, making it one of the most economical sedans on the market today. It is powered by an engine size with around 72 – 110 Horsepower. |
4. Toyota Sprinter Sedan
Average Used Price: $782 to $1,592 Also called the 110, or Toyota 110, this sedan is not only popular in Zambia, but in many countries in East and Central Africa. The Toyota Sprinter Eighth Edition is a compact sedan with five seats and four doors. An improved version of the wildly popular in Africa Toyota E100, the E110 is more stylish, sleeker, and has a more stylish rear as well as front. Its production started in May 1995 and would continue to the end of its production in March 2002. However, close to two decades later, this car has remained wildly popular in Africa and other places around the world. The Toyota Sprinter 8th Edition comes in 5 and 6 speed manual transmission, or 3 or 4 automatic transmission. The car is also available with a four-cylinder engine and tank capacity of about 50 liters. Horsepower is between 69 to 125HP, and it has a displacement of 1490 CC. The drivetrain has both 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive options, and the tank capacity is roughly 50 liters (petrol). Fuel consumption has been rated at around 8.1 liters/100 KM in urban areas and 5.2 liters/100 KM on highways. |
3. Toyota Corolla Axio
Average Used Price: $2,049 to $5,735 The Toyota Corolla Axio packs the panache that the Toyota Sprinter 8th generation and the Belta lack. It is a combination of elegance, power, and a solid number of driver and passenger safety features. The Axio is a compact, four-door car and it can accommodate for up to five people. Production for the Corolla Axio began in 2007 and continued until 2013. It is better looking than its predecessor the Toyota Corolla E120, with an interior that is both beautiful and comfortable and provides ample space for people and luggage. The most popular generation is 2012 with more than three models. It is available with a four-cylinder engine, horsepower of 110-160 hp, and a tank capacity of 55 liters. The cars overall fuel efficiency is about 5.8-6.9l/100km. While it is mostly available with an automatic transmission (5-gear variable), you can also find models with manual transmission if you search in the right places. The Toyota Corolla Axio is used widely in Africa as a family car as well as in the taxi business. It is made with the elegant simplicity that most Japanese cars are known for, but with the resilience to last many years while staying in great shape—even in the rugged landscape of Zambia. |
2. Toyota Mark X
Average Used Price: $1,535 to $5,325 What best suits a well-to-do Zambian professional? A black or silver Toyota Mark X, which is affordable and unique enough to stand out on the road thanks to its long nose and increased boot space. The first generation (2005-2010) is a dynamic and polished medium-sized sedan, with a passenger capacity of five people and with four doors. If you buy the four-wheel-drive type it comes as an all-wheel-drive (AWD), while the 2-wheel-drive models are offered with rear-wheel-drive (RWD.) This compact car has been in production since 2005. It is best known for its chic interior that is mostly made of leather upholstery, as well as its strong and well-defined exterior. This car oozes comfort and class, but at a surprisingly lower cost. It has a powerful six-cylinder engine with a horsepower of 215-280 HP and a displacement of around 2492 to 2994 CC. It has a tank capacity of 70l with a general fuel economy of around 8.5-11.2l/ 100km, and with a weight of 1895 kg it is a very stable car, even at high speeds. It can negotiate corners quicker and more comfortably than the E110, Belta or Axio, and many other smaller sedans. |
1. Toyota Allion
Average Used Price: $1,363 – $6,068 The Toyota Allion is built as a smaller version of the Mark X, and a bigger version of the Axio. With its spacious, upscale interior and clean, uncluttered exterior this car is obviously well-loved by Zambians, and for good reason. This compact sedan was in production between 2001 and 2007, has a 4-speed automatic transmission, and can reach a top speed of between 180 and 200 km/h. Its seating capacity can fit up to five people comfortably, and when put in comparison with the Toyota Axio it provides a significantly larger amount of space than its close sibling. It also has a spacious boot that can carry cargo up to 275 kg The Toyota Allion has an average tank capacity of 60 liters (petrol) and its fuel consumption rate is roughly 8 to 9.5liters/100km.With a powerful four-cylinder engine, horsepower of 109-155hp, and a displacement of 1496 to 1998 CC, it is powerful enough to navigate many types of roads across Zambia and Africa with ease. |

Why is it that most of Japanese vehicles come with user manuals written in Japanese. Surely there is no way these manuals can be translated into English language. Japan is a first world country I know they can manage to produce these user manuals.
Hi there George,
Thanks for sharing your opinion! Although a majority of Japanese car makers offer bilingual user manuals, a number of car models are initially produced solely for the Japanese market and in recent years have started to be exported overseas. We know it can be frustrating, but in most cases a quick web search for the English user manual for your vehicle can help.
